A moving average smooths out daily noise so you can see the trend. Triggerly alerts when a stock's price crosses an SMA or EMA, or when that average crosses a price you set. It does not alert when two averages cross each other, so there is no 50/200 golden-cross alert. A golden cross is still useful background for the trend. Watch price versus the 200-day average instead of waiting for the averages to cross.
SMA vs EMA
- SMA (simple moving average) weights every day in the window equally. It's slower and steadier.
- EMA (exponential moving average) gives more weight to recent days, so it reacts faster and gives earlier, but noisier, signals.
Common periods
- 20-day: short-term trend, popular with swing traders.
- 50-day: medium-term trend; widely watched.
- 200-day: the long-term trend line many investors use to decide whether a stock is in an uptrend at all.
Golden cross and death cross
A golden cross is when the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day. A death cross is the opposite. They're slow signals: by the time they happen, a lot of the move has already happened. They're useful as trend context, not as precise entry points. Triggerly will not ping you when the 50-day crosses the 200-day. If you want a heads-up around that long-term line, set an SMA or EMA alert for price crossing the 200-day, or for the 200-day average crossing a price you care about.
Price cross vs average versus a price
Triggerly has two moving-average modes, as separate SMA and EMA alert types. Periods run from 5 to 200.
- Price cross. The live price crosses yesterday's average, above or below. This happens earlier and more often. A practical setup is price crossing the 50-day for an early heads-up, or price versus the 200-day if you care about the long-term line.
- Average versus a price. The moving-average line itself crosses a price you set. That is not one average crossing another.
Two averages crossing, including a golden or death cross, is not an alert Triggerly can send.
Set one up on Android
- Open Triggerly and search the ticker.
- Choose the SMA alert or the EMA alert.
- Pick a period from 5 to 200, then price crossing the average or the average crossing a price you set, and the direction (above or below).
- Make sure push, email, or Telegram is on in Settings → Notifications. Those channels apply to every alert, not just this one.
To reduce whipsaws, combine it with another condition, for example a volume spike, so the alert fires only when the cross comes with real participation. A MACD alert is a different kind of cross: it watches the MACD line against its signal line or the zero line on completed daily closes, not one moving average against another. A new high or new low is separate again. It fires when the live price breaks the highest or lowest close in the window you pick.
Things to keep in mind
- In sideways markets, price can cross a moving average back and forth many times. Longer periods and combined conditions help.
- A cross is information, not a trade signal by itself. Check the news and the bigger picture first.
- Alerts fire during regular US market hours and are checked every 5 minutes. The app also shows pre-market and after-hours prices, but alerts don't fire then.
FAQ
What moving-average alert does Triggerly send?
Triggerly alerts when price crosses an SMA or EMA, or when that average crosses a price you set. Periods run from 5 to 200. It does not alert when two averages cross, so a 50/200 golden cross is not an alert. Watch price versus the 200-day average instead.
Should I use SMA or EMA?
EMA reacts faster and gives earlier signals with more false alarms; SMA is slower and steadier. Many traders use EMA for short periods and SMA for the 50- and 200-day.
Is there a free app for moving average alerts?
Yes. Triggerly has SMA and EMA alerts for free on Android: price versus the average, or the average versus a price you set. Turn on push, email, or Telegram once in Settings → Notifications; those channels apply to every alert.
